El Mokhtar ESSASSI a obtenu une licence és-sciences physiques en 1973 à l’Université Mohammed V. Sous la direction du Professeur Vialllefont, il a préparé et soutenu une thèse de doctorat d’Etat en 1977, à l’Université des Sciences et Techniques du Languedoc (Montpellier – France). Monsieur ESSASSI a été nommé maître de conférences en 1977 à la Faculté des Sciences de Rabat puis professeur de l’enseignement supérieur en 1981. Il a fondé le laboratoire de Chimie Organique Hétérocyclique en 1981. Il est également le président fondateur du Groupe Marocain de Chimie Hétérocyclique et Rédacteur en Chef du Journal Marocain de Chimie Hétérocyclique. Monsieur Essassi a été Chef de département de chimie de 1988-1994 et membre de la commission scientifique de la Faculté des Sciences de Rabat de 1999 à 2006.
Il est le directeur de l’UFR Pharmacochimie (DESA et Doctorat) depuis 1997. Monsieur ESSASSI est le coordonnateur National du Pôle de Compétences Pharmacochimie, membre du jury de l’Agrégation des Sciences physiques et membre du Laboratoire International Associé (LIA). Il est l’instigateur de l’organisation au Maroc des Rencontres Nationales sur la Chimie Hétérocyclique. Il est lauréat du Prix Jean Marie Lehn de Chimie en 1993. Il représente le Maroc dans le comité scientifique de TRAMECH (Trans Mediterranean Colloquium on Heterocyclic Chemistry) et membre du comité de lecture du Journal Algérien de la Société Chimique et de la revue Roumaine : Studii si Cercetari Stiintifice.
